The community
of La Jolla lies within the boundaries of
the City of San Diego, but it's location 14
miles north of downtown San Diego and population
of about 38,000, has helped it establish it's
own identity as a small town refuge from the
big city. La Jolla
actually has over a dozen neighborhoods each
with its own character. There are theories
linking the origin of the name, "La Jolla"
to the Spanish word, "la joya" which
means the jewel, and to the Indian word for
"cave".
The La
Jolla village area has been compared to the
Italian Riviera, and "Prospect Street",
to the famous, "Rodeo Drive". The
village is a true treasure and La Jolla is
one of California's most elegant, scenic and
exclusive communities with seven miles of
serpentine shoreline, beaches, exquisite views,
majestic caves, and fabulous shopping.
The La
Jolla shores and and La Jolla farms area has
many world class attractions and organizations.
From medical research, to oceanography to
beautiful cliff ocean views, this area of
La Jolla is simply stunning. La Jolla Is home
to the University of California at San Diego
(UCSD), The Scripps Institute of Oceanography,
The Salk Institute, The Steven Birch Aquarium,
and is well known as a center for medical
and scientific research.
The Nautilus
and Bird rock area of La Jolla has its own
commercial district along La Jolla Boulevard.
It is an area world famous for its surfing,
and is popular with younger as well as older
residents. Famous beaches include Wind and
Sea, Bird Rock and several others. The lifestyle
in this area is relaxed and the area has attached
and rental housing as well as beautiful custom
homes. The area is currently undergoing a
major reconstruction.
Mt. Soledad
is one of the finest areas of La Jolla and
provides tremendous residential real estate
value. It is quite a large area and contains
many fine residences with panoramic views
of the city and ocean. This area of La Jolla
contains the Mt. Soledad Memorial Cross within
the Soledad Natural Park and on the western
edge is the La Jolla Country Club. The many
winding streets include La Jolla Mesa Drive,
Nautilus Street and Soledad Mt. Road.
